Tex-Mex to the Max

ColoradoSprings Food Guy recently visited the Sonterra Grill located at 28 S Tejon St, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 which is an upscale Mexican restaurant with American Southwestern flair. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. This menu is delightful and their recipes are outside the box with culinary style. All menu items are freshly prepared. The chips and salsa are served up warm and delicious. However, my favorite dish is the Carne Asada. The beef is tender, well-seasoned and delectable. What sets this restaurant apart is the presentation of each dish – absolutely top notch. At Sonterra Grill, make sure you leave room for dessert and order their Banana Foster. It is flambéed tableside and is so decadent. What a wonderful ending to a night out. So if it is date night or happy hour, make the Sonterra Grill is at top of the list.

Los Frajoles Mexican Restaurant

The Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Los Frajoles Mexican Restaurant located at 665 S Cir Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80910. Although this is a franchised restaurant, they are all independently owned and operated. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive. I sampled their fish tacos and the Burrito Grande. The portions are huge and the flavor is outstanding. I enjoyed the burrito as the steak was tender and well-seasoned. The fish tacos were lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. The chips and salsa were divine. They were warm, light, and tasty. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and best of all, very authentic making you feel like you are in Mexico. So if you are in the mood for delicious Mexican food, come on down to Los Frajoles and let them know the Colorado Springs Food Guy sent you.

Stop Short for Fast Food

Stop Short for Fast Food
The Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Short Stop located at 485 N Circle Drive, Colorado Springs CO 80909. I went there recently for lunch and the burgers are good especially if you are on the go. Burgers are flame broiled in the same fashion as Burger King and the fries are crispy comparable to McDonald's in terms of thickness and texture. The milk shakes are thick and absolutely delicious. And the sweet tea is actually sweet! The staff is always friendly and helpful. So if you are in the mood for fast food but tired of the same old chains, stop in at Short Stop and get a Bag of Burgers for the family.

Eat like a king at George's Gyros And Burgers

Colorado Springs Food Guy on my quest for good food leads me to George's Gyros And Burgers located at 3008 S Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO. I ordered a Yorgo’s Gyro with fries. The Gyro was tender and flavorful and bursting with goodness. They hand cut their meat off the vertical broiler when you order. All gyros are served on a 7” fluffy pita bread with their signature homemade tzatziki sauce, onions, and tomatoes. The fries were hot and crispy despite them being frozen from a bag. The fries would even be better if they were fresh cut. The staff was all smiles and super friendly. Elda Esparza and Joanna Montoya told me more about the food and help me with my order. I think this is a great place for lunch or a quick dinner.

Wade’s made The Grade

Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Wade’s Café located at 3504 N. Academy Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80917 today for brunch. As you may already know, Wade’s Café has been around since 1953 and it is still a great place for breakfast and lunch. Their pancakes and omelets are what bring you in, but it is the friendly service that makes you come back again and again. I sampled the green chili smothered Breakfast Burrito and it was mouthwatering. The Everything and the Farmer’s omelets were spectacular, so no wonder they are considered to be some of the more popular dishes on the menu. For lunch, you should try the Rueben or the Chicken Fried Steak—simply delicious. So if you are in the mood for some legendary pancakes in a home-style family atmosphere, then come out to Wade’s Café and tell them the Colorado Springs Food Guy sent you.

High-Grade Jamaican Flavor

Colorado Springs Food Guy visited the High Grade Catering & Food Truck for dinner this evening.  This food truck specializes in ethnic Jamaican cuisine. The truck was next to JAK’s Brewing Co located on McLaughlin Rd in Peyton, CO. The food was authentic without a doubt and gave me a true sense of the culture. I sampled the curry lamb, the beef patty, the pork burrito, the ackee with saltfish sandwich, fried macaroni and cheese, and jerk chicken wings. First off, the shredded pork in the pork burrito was slow cooked to perfection, well-seasoned, and tender. The curry lamb tasted like chicken and was simply delicious and succulent and surprisingly not to spicy. Furthermore, the jerk chicken wings were big, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The highlights of my visit were the beef patty and ackee with saltfish sandwich. This is not only because they are staples in Jamaican cuisine, but because the ackee with saltfish tasted like homemade heaven! The beef patty was served up with plenty of spice and the crust was so flaky. The atmosphere was upbeat and customer service was excellent. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Needless to say this place sent my taste buds on a journey and was one of the best food trucks I’ve visited in a long time. If you are in the mood for Jamaican food, try High Grade Food Truck.

Lots of flavor at J2K's Classic Roadside Diner

Colorado Springs Food Guy tried a Slapjack Burger at J2K's Classic Roadside Diner located at Curbside Cuisine Downtown. The Slapjack is a huge burger with lots of flavor and spice. The two slices of pepper jack cheese played off the 2 fried jalapeno peppers very nicely. However, it is the homemade green chili that made this burger sing in my mouth. J2K's uses freshly baked Ciabatta buns from The Sourdough Boulangerie, a local bakery which is a nice touch since the buns are very tasty. So if you are in the mood for something different for lunch, give J2K's a try.

Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Curbside Cuisine Downtown in the quest for good food. So for lunch today, I tried WADA WADA Korean BBQ. I had the Bulkogi Bowl and it was one of the best food truck meals I have ever had. The meat was well-seasoned and scrumptious. It was sweet with a lot of spice. The rice was also cooked to perfection making this bowl unforgettable. If you are in the mood for Asian cuisine but don’t want to spend a lot of money, visit WADA WADA food truck at Curbside Cuisine Downtown.

Best Ribs in Houston

The Texas road trip continues. Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Ray's Rib Shack located at 4529 Old Spanish Trail, Houston, TX 77021. This is a small, casual restaurant that specializes in Texas style BBQ and good old fashioned soul food. I sampled the ribs, fried shrimp, and catfish. The ribs literally fell off the bone and were so tender. The shrimp and catfish were both fried to perfection--so light and crispy. The portions are huge and absolutely so delicious. Please don...'t forget to try the potato salad--just bursting with flavor. It's no wonder why the orders keep pouring in with standing room only. I met the owner Ray and his wife and they were so friendly and they knew just about every customer by name. This is a testament to customer loyalty. So if you are ever in Houston, TX don't forget to stop at Ray's Rib Shack for BBQ you won't forget.

Get Crazy at Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack

In the quest for good food, the Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack located at 310 Texas Avenue, Kemah, TX 77565. This upbeat, casual eatery specializes in bayou inspired seafood. The crawfish and gator are some of their more popular items.  The red snapper, frog legs, and the Possum burger (not made from possum meat) were also sampled. The crawfish were boiled to perfection as if I was in the bayou with just the right amount of spice. You can't crack just one. The gator, red snapper and the frog legs were well seasoned and oh so tender. The Possum burger is collasal where two different proteins are selected to form the patties. I selected the gator patty and the beef patty. What an awesome surprise! The flavor is unbeatable. For those who are not so daring, the Swamp Shack has more traditional seafood entrees such as tilapia, scallops, and shrimp. There is something for everyone at the Shack. Let me not forget the absolute stellar staff. Bob, the manager was extremely helpful on the phone (when I got lost) and in person when he made sure I was seated right away despite the crowd of people already there. The highlight of evening was my waitress Laci S. She was energetic, knowledge, and personable. I asked a million questions and she did not miss a beat -- she is an asset to the staff there. So, if you are ever in the Houston - Kemah area, you must stop in for fabulous seafood,Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack
