A Little Taste of Mexico in Pueblo

Colorado Springs Food Guy recently visited Garlic & Onions Mexican Grill located at 4333 Thatcher Ave, Pueblo, CO 81005. There are no words to describe the food and the atmosphere. I started the evening with a delightful Queso Bean Dip with chips and Beef Flautas. The Bean Dip was spicy and hearty and went well the warm chips. The Flautas were also very good. For dinner, I sampled the Garlic and Onions Burrito, the Chicken and Steak Fajitas, and the Cielo Mar & Tierra. The burrito and the Fajitas were filled with well-seasoned chicken and beef and a host of other fresh ingredients—even the guacamole was fresh.  The Garlic and Onions burrito was smothered with chili and served up in huge portions with Spanish rice and refried beans. The Cielo Mar & Tierra dish was exciting with steak, chicken and shrimp grilled and seared with jalapenos that gave it a spicy kick. The food at Garlic & Onions is truly authentic. Everything was so flavorful. However, it was the Chimichanga Cheesecake for dessert that stole the show. It was crispy on the outside and so creamy good on the inside. It definitely hit the spot. So if you are ever in Pueblo and want that authentic Mexican cuisine, come visit Garlic & Onions Mexican Grill and tell Jesse, the owner, that the Colorado Springs Food Guy sent you.

Chef Wins You Over to the Lighter Side

Colorado Springs Food Guy recently visited Los Angeles to film The Quest for Good Food and attended a private tasting with Chef Vanderlyn Williams. Her cuisine focuses on the benefits of healthy eating.  Vanderlyn offered a sampling of her most popular salads. I tried the Grilled Chicken Salad with Kale, Salmon Salad, Fish Salad, and the Crab Mary Salad. Chef Vanderlyn started the evening with a fabulous appetizer, Baked Avocado. This was crispy on the outside and the avocado was still soft on the inside—simply delicious. I am a hearty, comfort food eater but the salads were filling and tasty. The chicken, salmon, and fish were all grilled to perfection. These salads were wonderful. However, the Crab Mary Salad was my absolute favorite. Named after Vanderlyn’s mother, this delightful salad was made with real crabmeat and none of that imitation stuff. The crabmeat was tender and succulent. The ingredients used for all the salads were so fresh and of the highest quality. Chef Vanderlyn has enjoyed cooking since she was a child and this love for cooking translates to her food. After meeting Chef Vanderlyn  I can truly appreciate having a hearty meal on the lighter side.  If you are interested in catering an event with healthier food, then contact Chef Vanderlyn on Facebook for one of her outstanding salads. Let her know the Colorado Springs Food Guy referred you.

A Chef that Gets the Party Started

The Colorado Springs Food Guy recently visited Los Angeles and attended a private party hosted by Chef Yokia Perkins, owner of From Scratch to You Catering Services.  She provided a tasting of her most popular hors d'oeuvres. I sampled the Shrimp Enchiladas with Cream Jalapeno Sauce, the Chicken Capri Salad, Salmon Croquettes, Turkey Sliders, and Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf Cupcakes. The Shrimp Enchiladas had a nice spicy kick with the Jalapeno sauce.  The Chicken Capri Salad was made with fresh ingredients and the meat was well-seasoned. The Salmon Croquettes were crispy but moist on the inside—simply delicious. On the surface, the Turkey Sliders appeared pretty ordinary, but I was left in awe as to how she made them so moist and scrumptious. However, my absolute favorite was the Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf Cupcakes. They are small, but they are hearty, filling and flavorful.  Yokia Perkins was a wonderful host and a true professional. The atmosphere was warm and friendly as this was a family and friends affair. I expect to hear great things from Yokia and From Scratch to You Catering Services as her food is top-notch. If you are in the Los Angeles area and are in need of a private chef or event caterer, message Yokia at From Scratch to You Catering Services on Facebook and tell her the Colorado Springs Food Guy referred you.

Smallcakes Satisfies My Sweet Tooth

Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Smallcakes Cupcakery & Creamery located at 7335 Academy Blvd N, Colorado Springs, CO 80920. What a treat--so many cupcakes and so little time! I sampled the Birthday Cake with real sprinkles, Pink Chocolate, and my absolute favorite, the Peanut Butter cupcake made with peanut butter cream and topped with crushed peanut butter cups. The cakes are moist and scrumptious but it is the array of frostings that take your taste buds over the top. The Cupcakery’s atmosphere very quaint and relaxed. The staff is absolutely friendly and the service is top-notch. The owner shared with me that they will be making cupcake infused ice cream very soon. This summer is going to be delectable when ice cream is served up with these amazing cupcakes. So if you have a sweet tooth like I do, stop in at Smallcakes Cupcakery and tell them the Colorado Springs Food Guy sent you.

Soul Food with a Little Southern Comfort in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs Food Guy just visited London’s Soul Food restaurant located at 4747 Flintridge Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80918. I sampled their Memphis-Styled Ribs, potato salad, BBQ baked beans, and sweet potato pie. OMG -- what a treat! The ribs were caramelized to perfection – very meaty and moist. The potato salad was amazing with a hint of mustard. The baked beans had a sweet, smoky taste with bits of beef simmered right in. The sweet potato pie topped off a very good meal. It was very rich, warm, and scrumptious. This restaurant is family owned and operated which makes sense since everyone is so welcoming and friendly. So if you’re in the mood for some southern comfort food, then stop in at London’s Soul Food restaurant and tell them Colorado Springs Food Guy sent you. Come hungry leave happy!

Moon Star II Chinese Restaurant

Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Moon Star II Chinese Restaurant located at 5873 Palmer Park Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80915. This is a casual but quaint restaurant decorated with modern Chinese flair. Moon Star II serves most of their dishes family style with huge portions to be shared. They also have single-serve dishes. I sampled the Orange Chicken and the Dieter’s Chicken dishes and they were but delicious. The Orange Chicken is definitely the best I have had in Colorado Springs. The Dieter’s Chicken was a delightful mix of chicken and fresh vegetables steamed to perfection. They put the sauce on the side to reduce the salt and calories. I love this restaurant and highly recommend it. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you are in the mood for some great Chinese food at a reasonable price, then visit Moon Star II.

Having a Hot Orgasm at Go Fish

Recently the Colorado Springs Food Guy visited Go Fish Sushi located at 1 Broadway #B108, Denver, CO 80203. This is an unpretentious Japanese café where sushi is served up with a casual, sports bar appeal. They also have another location at 2055 W 136th Ave Ste B106, Broomfield, CO 80023. I sampled several of their special rolls. The Hot Orgasm roll is the absolute best with cream cheese and tempura green chili. It explodes in your mouth like—an orgasm.  The Firecracker roll comes at you with a bang with spicy tuna and jalapeño peppers. The Pay roll is delicious with a hint of sweet potato wrapped in tuna. You can bet the Las Vegas roll is also a winner with avocado and kani. Come for the sushi but stay for Happy Hour. Go Fish has an extensive wine and saki selection—the pineapple infused saki is a must have. My host and manager Brian always ensures my staff and I have a great time. If you are tired of same ole sushi, head to Go Fish and let them know the Colorado Springs Food Guy sent you.
